An enormous variety of gloves are available for a wide range of uses, and to an extent anything that keeps your hands warm will serve. However, for climbing purposes, handwear should also allow a high degree of dexterity, be it for fiddling gear or opening the emergency malt loaf, and achieving an acceptable balance is surprisingly tricky.

Glove design and manufacture is one of the most complicated areas of mountaineering soft goods, and the quest for a perfect glove will absorb many a mountaineer.
