The founder of Rab is Rab Carrington, who decided in 1981 to set up a small company in Sheffield, using his own experience of climbing in extreme conditions as the basis for his designs. Primarily manufacturing high quality sleeping bags and down clothing made for those involved in alpine outdoor pursuits, Carrington's company was a success from the very beginning. He knew that the products he made had to meet the needs of 'lightweight alpinists', that is, alpinists who needed light, but warm clothing and sleeping bags, which would not be a burden to carry, but would protect them from the freezing temperatures.
Technologies used by Rab
The range of products made by Rab has been extended over the years, however, its core values of high performance equipment and quality live on. Today, the range encompasses all clothing layers and uses specialist fabric technology to produce comfortable, durable and breathable clothing that allows alpinists to push themselves to the limit, in even the harshest of environments.
One of the technologies used by Rab for its face protection products is Pertex Shield, which has a micro porous, breathable, but waterproof coating. This is a highly advanced piece of technology that makes it easier for alpinists to avoid frostbite, without feeling uncomfortable. Another technology employed by Rab is Vapour-rise; this is a type of soft shell system that Carrington actually created himself. It is reliant on a denier gradient and is made of two separate layers which allow for maximum comfort, protection and breathability. The company has just recently designed a lightweight version of their Vapour-rise fabric, which comes with a thinner outer layer and a fleece lined inner layer.
After the company was sold in 2004, its headquarters moved to Derbyshire. Today, it designs, manufactures and sells everything from sleeping bags and base layers to t-shirts, gloves, over-trousers, waterproof jackets and insulated down jackets.
